    The Jefferson Institute gathered journalists from regions where press freedom is endangered to participate in the UNESCO Word Press Freedom Day conference in San Jose, Costa Rica. The conference provided a venue for civil society, the international community, and democratic governments to uphold the values of press freedom and recommit to defending the media from attacks on their independence. The conference also paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

    The Jefferson Institute brought together journalists from Central America to exchange best practices at the launch of the IREX Regional Journalist Security Network in San Salvador, El Salvador. Next to attending the launch, JI’s participants took part in a dialogue with US state officials to discuss some of the security challenges confronting journalists in Central America.

    A three-member Norwegian-Serbian delegation visited the National Defense University Ukraine (NDUU) in Kiev on 24 April 2013 with the aim of identifying opportunities for cooperation in the field of distance learning.

    The Jefferson Institute gathered human rights activists from the broader Middle East region to discuss challenges, constraints, and opportunities that NGOs throughout the region face in advocating for democratic values in their transitional societies. The activist attended the 9th BMENA Forum for the Future, an international venue that provides a space for partners, supportive countries and organizations to engage in political, economic and social reform on an annual basis.

    The Military Academy in Belgrade hosted its second annual conference "Distance learning in the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces," marking significant progress in the Jefferson Institute’s efforts to support Serbia’s progress in distance education.
